बाल समै रबि भक्षि लियो, तब तीनहुँ लोक भयो अँधियारो ताहि सों त्रास भयो जग को, यह संकट काहु सों जात न टारो । देवन आनि करी बिनती, तब छाङि दियो रबि कष्ट निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ १	Baala samai rabi bhakshi liyo, taba teenahu loka bhayo andhiyaaro Taahi so traasa bhayo jaga-ko, yaha sankata kaahu so jaata na taaro  | Dewan-aani karee binatee, taba chaari diyo rabi kashta nivaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi, sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  1
Meaning: During childhood, You swallowed the Sun. Then the whole world became dark. On that account, the whole world was troubled and no one could rectify the situation. The demi-gods came and requested You, and You released the Sun from Your mouth to remove the fear. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
बालि की त्रास कपीस बसै गिरि, जात महाप्रभु पन्थ निहारो चौंकि महामुनि साप दियो, तब चाहिय कौन बिचार बिचारो । कै दिव्ज रूप लिवाय महा प्रभु सो तुम दास के सोक निहारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ २	Baali kee traasa kapeesa basai giri jaata mahaa prabhu pantha nihaaro Chaunki mahaa muni saapa diyo, taba chaahiya kauna bichaara bichaaro  | Kai divja roopa livaaya mahaa prabhu,  so tuma daasa ke soka nihaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  2
Meaning: Due to fear of Baali, Sugreeva lived on a mountain. He saw Lord Raama on His way. He could not leave the mountain due to the curse of a saint. You found a solution to this (i.e. You selected the thought that was needed). You took the form of a seer and brought Lord Raama, and relieved the suffering of Sugreeva. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
अंगद के संग लेन गये सिय, खोज कपीस यह वैन उचारो जीवत ना बचिहौ हम सोजु, बिना सुधि लाए इहाँ पगु धारो । हेरि थके तट सिन्धु सबै तब, लाय सिया सुधि प्रान उबारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ३	Angad kay sanga lena gaye Siya, khoja kapeesa yaha baina uchaaro Jeewata naa bachihau hum soju, binaa sudhi laa-ai ihaan pagu dhaaro  | Heri thaki tatta sindhu sabai taba, laaya Siyaa sudhi praana ubaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  3
Meaning: You went with Angada (and others) to find Seetaa and Angada said, ‘We will not remain alive unless we return with information about Seetaa.’ They all got tired when they saw the ocean from the coast. Then You brought information about Seetaa and saved everyone. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
रावन त्रास दई सिय को, सब राक्षसि सों कहि सोक निवारो ताहि समय हनुमान महाप्रभु, जाय महा रजनीचर मारो । चाहत सिय असोक सों आगि, सु दै प्रभु मुद्रिका सोक निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ४	Raavana traasa da-ee Siya ko, saba raakshasi son kahi soka nivaaro Taahi samaya Hanumaana mahaa prabhu, jaaya mahaa rajaneechara maaro  | Chaahita Siya asoka son aagi, so dai prabhu mudrikaa soka nivaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  4
Meaning: Raavana ordered all the female demons to trouble Seetaa. She asked (Trijataa) to remove Her troubles (by building a funeral pyre into which She could jump). At that moment Hanumaan, the great Lord, went and killed many demons there. He wanted Seetaa to be relived and therefore, He gave her Raama’s ring to dispel her anxiety. बान लग्यो उर लछिमन के, तब प्रान तजे सुत रावन मारो लै गृह वैद्य सुषेन समेत, तबै गिरि द्रोन सुबीर उपारो । आनि सजीवन हाथ दई, तब लछिमन के तुम प्रान उबारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ५	Baana lagyo ura Lachimana ke, taba praana taje suta Raavana maaro Lai griha vaidya Sushena sameta, tabai giri Drona subeera upaaro  | Aani sanjeevana haatha da-ee, taba Lachimana ke tuma praana ubaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  5
Meaning: When the arrow of Meghanaada (son of Raavana) struck the heart of Lakshmana, He almost died. You brought the healer Sushena, along with his home, and then finally You brought Mount Drona which had the magical herb Sanjeevani. By giving this herb, You rescued the life of Lakshmana. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
रावन जुद्ध अजान कियो, तब नाग कि फाँस सबै सिर डारो श्रीरघुनाथ समेत सबै, दल मोह भयो यह संकट भारो । आनि खगेस तबै हनुमान जु, बन्धन काटि सुत्रास निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ६	Raavana juddha ajaana kiyo, taba naaga ki phaansa sabai sira daaro Sri Raghunatha sameta sabai, dala moha bhayo yaha sankat bhaaro  | Aani khagesa tabai Hanumaana ju, bandhana kaati sutraasa nivaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  6
Meaning: Raavana fought a war while remaining invisible and chained everyone in Naagapaasa (chain made of cobras). Along with Shri Raama, everyone got deluded and thought it to be very big trouble. You brought Garuda (from Vaikuntha), Who ripped apart the snakes. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
बन्धु समेत जबै अहिरावन, लै रघुनाथ पताल सिधारो देविहिं पुजि भली विधि, सों बलि देहु सबै मिलि मन्त्र बिचारो । जाय सहाय भयो तब ही, अहिरावन सैन्य समेत सँहारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ७	Bandhu sameta jabai Ahiraavana, lay raghunaatha pataala sidhaaro Devihi puji bhalee vidhi, so-bali dehu sabai mili mantra vichaaro  | Jaaya sahaaya bhayo taba hee, Ahiraavana sainya samet sanghaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi, sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  7
Meaning: When Ahiraavana (Raavana’s brother) kidnapped Raama and His brother Lakshmana, he prayed to the Goddess in various ways and prepared well for the human sacrifice of Raama. Then You went as a helper to Raama and killed Ahiraavana along with his army. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!
काज कियो बङ देवन के, तुम बीर महाप्रभु देखि बिचारो कौन सो संकट मोर गरीब, को जो तुमसों नहिं जात है टारो । बेगि हरो हनुमान महाप्रभु, जो कछु संकट होय हमारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ८	Kaaja kiyo barda devana ke, tuma beera mahaa prabhu dekhi bichaaro Kauna so sankata mora gareeba, ko jo tuma so nahin jaata hai taaro  | Begi haro Hanumaana maha prabhu, so kachu sankat hoya hamaaro Ko nahin jaanata hai jaga mein kapi sankat mochan naama tihaaro  ||  8
Meaning: You have done deeds for great noble Ones. O brave and great Lord, cast a glance on me and then decide what pain of the destitute me cannot be removed by you? (In other words, remove all my pain!). O Hanumaan the great lord, please absolve any of our existing troubles quickly. In this world, who does not know that You are known as remover of obstacles, O Kapi!

Someday you want your daughter, niece, goddaughter and best friend’s little girl to grow up and have the option of being a firewoman, a writer, an Olympic gold medalist in boxing, a sergeant, a celebrity chef, the president … or whatever else her little heart desires.

And you want her to get paid the exact same amount for the same work that her male colleagues do.

While equal pay has been in the news a lot lately, research hasn’t quite pinpointed why women don’t make as much as men in the workplace. Some say it’s because we don’t negotiate enough .Some say it’s because when we do negotiate, we get turned down or are deemed too aggressive. Others think it’s because we have a tendency to get saddled with all the family responsibilities. Maybe all of these are true.

But maybe, just maybe, it also has something to do with ideas that have been subtly ingrained in us since we were very young.

Proof That What Parents Say (and Do) Matters
In fact, a new study shows just how easy it is to persuade kids into believing they aren’t good at something. In a nutshell, the study sought to prove that kids easily adopt beliefs they hear about their gender, which in turn can affect their real-life performance. For example, telling a boy he’s bound to be good at math because he’s a boy could encourage him to give up trying, while telling a girl that girls aren’t good at math could actually make her believe that she is, in fact, bad at math, and cause her to be worse at math because of it.

As predicted, the two experiments in the study showed that the performance of 4- to 7-year-olds was impaired when they were told that another group (e.g., “boys are good at this game”) was successful at the same task.

When dealing with gender and what’s “right” and “wrong” when it comes to raising girls to their full potential, it seems there’s a lot to learn …

A Steep Learning Curve
Children start to understand gender roles starting at 30 months, and start developing social prejudices–including gender-based prejudices–starting in preschool. The us-versus-them mentality reaches its apex between 5 and 7 years of age before slowly waning.

As parents, we’ve never told our daughters that there are “girl-specific” jobs, or that the key to happiness and self-worth is marriage. (Of course, we can’t help the messages they might see when we’re not around.) But there are other ways in which our daughters, and the other little girls in our lives, could be learning life lessons from us that will lead them to shy away from “challenging” subjects like trigonometry and engineering, take the first low salary offered to them out of college or get burned out before age 30.

We asked Anea Bogue, M.A., an acclaimed self-esteem expert, educator, certified life coach and creator of REALgirl® empowerment workshops, to share some of the ways you might be holding your daughter back from her full potential without even knowing it.

1. You teach her to be polite and quiet.
There’s a fine line between being well-behaved and being a doormat, and it seems that all too often girls are pushed into territory bordering on the latter.

“The ‘girls are sugar and spice and everything nice’ adage that [society is] programmed with leads us to raise girls who are what I call ‘pleasers,’” says Bogue. “We teach our girls in a variety of ways that being nice, avoiding conflict, not upsetting others and not challenging the status quo are all part of being a likeable, desirable, successful girl–and one day woman.”

What this could mean for her future: It’s easy to see how this mindset could lead to the kind of behavior where women don’t negotiate for higher salaries, because they don’t want to offend a potential employer, or they don’t speak up in class, and eventually meetings, for risk of being seen as not nice.

How you can avoid this: While we all want well-behaved children, don’t forget to teach your daughter that it’s okay to debate, disagree and negotiate–respectfully, of course–and especially with her peers. Encourage her to speak up in class, from preschool to college, and state her opinion, and then be ready and willing to defend it.
