How much Electricity does it use?

This page contains some notes and measurements on electricity consumption of various household items. I had to work out the cost of running a server for a year and was surprised at how many units of electricity were used, so I decided to start recording other household items. The items I've listed here are things which are typically left plugged in (on standby).
How much does it cost?

Electricity consumption (at least in the UK) is measured and paid for by units, where one unit is the equivalent of 1 kilowatt hour. So a 100watt light bulb left on for ten hours uses 1unit of electricity (100watts x 10hours = 1000 watt hours = 1kwh) as would a 2kw fan heater left on for half an hour.

The following table is provided as a guide and shows how many units (kwh) devices would use according to their rated power consumption:

Ratingkw/hourkwh/daykwh/weekkwh/4 weekskwh/year
1 watt 0.001 0.024 0.168 0.672 8.76
2 watts 0.002 0.048 0.336 1.344 17.47
5 watts 0.005 0.12 0.84 3.36 43.8
10 watts 0.01 0.24 1.68 6.72 87.6
20 watts 0.02 0.48 3.36 13.44 175.2
50 watts 0.05 1.2 8.4 33.6 438
100 watts 0.1 2.4 16.8 67.2 876
200 watts 0.2 4.8 33.6 134.4 1752
1 kw 1 24 168 672 8760
2 kw 2 48 336 1344 17472
3 kw 3 72 504 2016 26208

So a 100 watt bulb left on 24 hours a day for a year will use 876 units of electricity, which at (say) 15p per unit would work out at £131.40. By adding a time switch to switch that same bulb on for only 8 hours a day would reduce the annual electricity cost down to £43.80 (a saving of £87.60). So if the time switch cost £20 then it would pay for itself more than four times over within a year. Contrast that with a modern high efficiency 15 watt bulb (which gives out almost as much light) that would use 131.4 units of electricity if left on 24 hours all year, or 20 - a significant saving.

If you want to see how long it takes to use one unit of electricity for a device then this is tabulated in the following :

RatingTime to use 1 unit
1 watt 1000 hours almost 1 unit every 6 weeks
2 watts 500 hours almost 1 unit every 3 weeks
5 watts 200 hours just over 1 unit every 8 days
10 watts 100 hours just over 1 unit every 4 days
20 watts 50 hours just over 1 unit every 2 days
50 watts 20 hours a little over 1 unit every day
100 watts 10 hours almost 2.5 units a day
200 watts 5 hours almost 5 units a day
1 kw 1 hour 24 units a day
2 kw 30 minutes 48 units a day
3 kw 20 minutes 72 units a day

How much does it use?

The following table lists the power consumption figures that I have measured for a number of different devices:
DeviceWatts

24 port router (Linksys SR2024) 21 watts 61 184
IBM x3200M server behind APC Smart UPS 1000 120 watts 350 1051

Note:
All measurements are approximate and may not be typical (YMMV).
Power consumption often fluctuates and for many devices it is not constant. So treat these figures as a guide only.
Some devices (such as bulbs and fan-heaters) I have not measured but instead listed their rated value.
Working it out for yourself if it isn't listed above - how much electricity does it use?

Almost everything which uses electricity will come with or have on it an indication of how much electricity it uses. This might not be obvious, because an indication of electricity usage might take any of the following forms:
wattage (or watts)

1000 watts = 1kw = 1 unit per hour.
amps

Using the high school equation:

watts = volts x amps

you can work out the wattage provided you know the voltage. Mains voltage in the UK is notionally 230volts, in much of Europe it is 220 volts and 120 volts in America.

So, in the UK if something draws 2.4amps then the wattage = 230 x 2.4 = 552watts.

If this were on a power supply supplying 2.4 amps at 9volts then this would give a notional figure of 21.6 watts.
BTU

BTUs are unit often used with heating or cooling. For a traditional electric fan heater you can use:

kW = BTU / 34129

However this equation cannot be used for air conditioning units or heaters other than fan heater types.

Treat the above as a guide, as the actual consumption figure will depend on the conditions in which a device is used and any published watts, amps or BTU typically represent the maximum and not the typical power usage.
Are there alternatives?

If you are concerned about the amount of electricity you are using then there may be alternatives. There is a modern trend towards lower power devices - although you have to balance any cost savings with the purchase cost, so sometimes it will be more economical to wait until something fails and needs replacing.

The Story Of Dussehra

According to legend, Rama was the eldest son of King Dashrath and was beloved of all because of his genial ways. The king decided to hand over his throne to him and retire. However, Rama's stepmother wanted her own son Bharata to be the king and forced the king to banish Rama from Ayodhya, the kingdom and give him fourteen years of exile. Rama gladly accepted the stepmother's wishes and left the palace and the kingdom with his wife Sita, and brother Lakshmana. The grief-stricken father soon died. However, when Bharata who was on a visit to his maternal grandfather came back and came to know what his mother had done, he immediately set out to being his brother back from the forest. "However, though Rama was glad to welcome his brother, he refused to go back to the kingdom before the term expired. However, Rama had another loss at hand as the demon-king Ravana, kidnapped his wife Sita and took her away to his kingdom. This became the reason behind the long search and the various events that in time, led to the destruction of Ravana by the hands of Ravan with the help of the monkey army he had befriended on the way. Dussehra is the day, when Rama killed Ravana and won back his wife (Hence also called Vijayadashmi) who had managed to save her honor from the dirty hands of Ravana.

According to Hindu mythology a demon named Mahishasura, earned the favor of Lord Shiva after a long and hard penance. Lord Shiva, impressed with his devotion, blessed him that no man or deity would be able to kill him and that only a woman can kill him. Mahishasur was very pleased with this boon as he thought that a woman can never defeat him. Arrogant Mahishasura started his reign of terror over the Universe and people were killed mercilessly. He even attacked the abode of the gods and conquered the heavens and became their leader.

The Defeat Of Gods

After their defeat and humiliation at the hands of Mahishasur, the gods took refuge under Lord Brahma, who took them to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The only solution left was the creation of a woman who possess the ultimate power to fight and defeat Mahishasur. Pure energy blazed forth from Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - the trinity forming the pure energy of Godhood, all concentrating at one point that took the form of Goddess Durga.

Culmination Of Energies

Her face reflected the light of Shiva, her ten arms were from Lord Vishnu, her feet were from Lord Brahma, the tresses were formed from the light of Yama, the god of death and the two breasts were formed from the light of Somanath, the Moon God, the waist from the light of Indra, the king of gods, the legs and thighs from the light of Varun, the god of oceans and hips from the light of Bhoodev (Earth), the toes from the light of Surya (Sun God), fingers of the hand from the light of the Vasus, the children of Goddess river Ganga and nose from the light of Kuber, the keeper of wealth for the Gods. The teeth were formed from the light of Prajapati, the lord of creatures, the Triad of her eyes was born from the light of Agni, the Fire God, the eyebrows from the two Sandhyas,ie, sunrise and sunset, the ears from the light of Vayu, the god of Wind. Thus from the energy of these gods, as well as from many other gods, was formed the goddess Durga.

Power Of Weapons

The gods then gifted the goddess with their weapons and other divine objects to help her in her battle with the demon, Mahishasura. Lord Shiva gave her a trident while Lord Vishnu gave her a disc. Varuna, gave her a conch and noose, and Agni gave her a spear. From Vayu, she received arrows. Indra, gave her a thunderbolt, and the gift of his white-skinned elephant Airavata was a bell. From Yama, she received a sword and shield and from Vishwakarma (god of Architecture), an axe and armor. The god of mountains, Himavat gifted her with jewels and a lion to ride on. Durga was also given many other precious and magical gifts, new clothing, and a garland of immortal lotuses for her head and breasts.

The beautiful Durga, bedecked in jewels and golden armor and equipped with the fearsome weaponry of the gods, was ready to engage in battle with the fierce and cruel Mahishasura. Mahishasura and his demon allies found their attention drawn from heaven to Earth, as Durga's power moved its way towards heaven. Though confident of their power and control in heaven, the demons could not help being awestruck.

The Battlefield

As Mahishasura's armies were struck down effortlessly by Durga, it became obvious to him that he was not as secure in heaven as he had thought. No demon could fight her and win. Her breath would replenish her armies - bringing back to life all of her soldiers who fell. The demons were in chaos and were easily defeated and captured. Mahishasura was shocked and enraged by the disastrous events on the battlefield. He took on the form of a demonic buffalo, and charged at the divine soldiers of Durga, goring and killing many and lashing out with his whip-like tail. Durga's lion pounced on the demon-buffalo and engaged him in a battle. While he was thus engaged, Durga threw her noose around his neck.

Mahishasura then assumed the form of a lion and when Durga beheaded the lion, Mahishasura escaped in the form of a man who was immediately face to face with a volley of arrows from Durga. The demon escaped yet again and then having assumed the form of a huge elephant, battered Durga's lion with a tusk. With her sword Durga hacked the tusk into pieces.

The Victory

The demon reverted once more to the form of the wild buffalo. He hid himself in the mountains from where he hurled boulders at Durga with his horns. Durga drank the divine nectar, the gift of Kuber. She then pounced on Mahishasura, pushing him to the ground with her left leg. She grasped his head in one hand, pierced him with her sharp trident held in another, and with yet another of her ten hands she wielded her bright sword, beheading him. At last he fell dead, and the scattered surviving remnants of his once invincible army fled in terror.

We are saved from Sin to do Good Works

We know of the Will of God for our lives because He has graciously Anointed a Son, Jesus, as our Guide and Prophet to reveal it to us, and to give us the Good and Beneficial Message (Gospel) that we may live more purely and abundantly in this life, and at the end of our lives, may be united with the God, the Creator and Ruler of the Universe, for all eternity.

We truly have been saved from sin by Jesus, and are saved from it and forgiven for all past sins when we first accept him as our Master and Savior. We are granted eternal life through obedience to God's commands as revealed by His Son, Jesus, and through God's constant forgiveness and a reliance upon Him for guidance.

Heaven has been opened and made available to all of humanity though the gracious teachings, life and example of Jesus - who reflected in all things the will of God, who is his Father and ours. But no one can enter into Heaven except by believing what God has revealed through His Anointed One, Jesus, and by doing what God has required of us.

Faith is the root, and Good Works the branches of our Salvation, but neither can exist, unless nourished by the ongoing Grace of God.

No one can deduce from the fact that God's Grace is in this way supreme that, therefore, we may sin with impunity, or that we may ignore the duty God has laid upon us to do Good Works.

All MAY go to Heaven, if they use the means and observe the conditions prescribed by God, because Salvation is conditional. All CAN now go to Heaven IF they fulfill those conditions, and are judged by God according to their Good Works worthy of entrance. (And know that it is not for us to judge whether we or any other person will be found worthy in God's sight. It is not for us to boast that we have forced God to grant us eternal life, or presume that we can or must do a certain amount of Good Works in order to earn it. It will be determined by God alone whether we have served Him, and will separate the wheat from the chaff in His own way, and in His own way. All we can do is strive and rely on his ongoing Goodness and Grace.)

The first of these conditions is to begin having Faith in God - a Faith that believes that the Ruler of the Universe is real, that His commands are Just and that His Prophet and chosen One is Jesus, the Anointed ("Christ") through whom God's will was revealed to us.

The second condition is obedience to those commands, expressed through Good Works, which are required by God. We are shown perfect obedience (and shown that all people may indeed obey God) through the life and example of His chosen one, Jesus, who lived, taught and died as a pure moral example to us, so that we should follow him and be made perfect in righteousness though observance of the commandments. We do this with God's help and a reliance on God's holy Spirit. And we must, on this journey of Faith, always seek God's forgiveness for our faults and failures as we strive towards this perfect expression of Righteousness God's Anointed Son, Jesus, has modeled for us.

Salvation from sin, that offer God makes to man that rescues him from sin, is accepted purely and completely by faith alone. How could it be otherwise? Even our knowledge of what sin IS comes from God, so man's works, apart from God and the knowledge of God, are clearly not sufficient to do works that are up to God's standards, and only accidentally and by chance even approach what is "Good." We learn from God's Anointed One - His Prophet, Jesus - what obedience really means: that it starts in the heart, and in our intentions to do Good in the sight of God, and that this is made real in our daily lives in all that we do.

This knowledge of God's Will, given to us by the One whom He sent, is a gift we did not earn, nor did we merit it, since Jesus was sent out of God's love for us, who are His creations (John 3:16.) But once we learn of this great and free offer of salvation, we must act upon it, and will judged according to our obedience to God's offer. For whoever believes in him has eternal life, but those who do not believe and "does what is true" and "comes to the light" that Jesus calls us to, works righteousness, according to God's plan, and is granted eternal life with the Father.

Let us not have a false reliance on our Good Works alone, relying on a false sense of smugness. But also know that we may not falsely rely on our first bloom of Faith alone to carry us into Heaven, for God has prescribed the path that we take, and we must meekly strive to follow it according to His Will without arrogance or pride.

The clear teaching of scripture, therefore, is that once we have been exposed to and accept this offer of salvation, we will be fully accountable for our response to it, and will be judged thereafter according to our deeds. Every means of improvement and happiness, and the knowledge of it, is God's free gift, but then it is our duty to act upon that knowledge.

With God's holy Spirit aiding us in all things and at all times, and Jesus' example always before us and in our hearts, we may live this life in peace and happiness, and thereafter, according to God's good pleasure, enter into God's Eternal Presence.

Scripture Selections:

"And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” John 3:19-21

"By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him." 1 John 3:19-22

“Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.” Matt. 20:26-27

“And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?’” Mark 8:34-36
